From a productivity perspective, regenerative agriculture is proving to be more than just an ecological solution. A 2019 study by the Ecdysis Foundation compared 40 farms across the United States and found that regenerative farms were 78% more profitable than conventional ones, despite slightly lower yields in some crops. This profitability came from reduced input costs, healthier soils producing more nutrient-dense crops, and access to premium organic markets.

The climate benefits are equally impressive. Research published in Nature estimates that regenerative practices could sequester over 322 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide globally if adopted widely, equivalent to reversing nearly a decade of fossil fuel emissions. This not only mitigates climate change but also strengthens farms against droughts and floods.

For farmers in regions like Africa and Asia, where soil degradation threatens livelihoods, regenerative agriculture offers a pathway to resilience. Simple practices such as planting nitrogen-fixing cover crops or applying compost can restore fertility at low cost. For developed nations, consumer demand for sustainably produced food is creating new markets and opportunities.

Without it, growth falters, wounds heal slowly, and energy levels plummet.


Proteins are made of amino acids, tiny compounds that the body uses for countless processes. Whether from animal or plant sources, they provide the foundation for physical resilience and sharp mental performance. Eggs, milk, fish, and lean meats remain timeless sources of complete proteins. At the same time, legumes such as beans, lentils, and groundnuts provide affordable and sustainable options, particularly in regions where meat is scarce or costly.

In Nigeria, the importance of protein cannot be overstated. Malnutrition, especially protein deficiency, remains a public health challenge in some rural communities. Yet, Nigerian cuisine is naturally rich in protein diversity. Dishes like moi moi (steamed bean pudding), akara (bean cakes), egusi (melon seed soup), and fish pepper soup provide not just flavor but vital nutrients. The protein-packed suya, a spiced grilled meat delicacy, remains a popular evening snack that doubles as a source of strength.



Efforts to combat malnutrition in Nigeria have encouraged families to diversify diets, emphasizing affordable protein sources like beans, soybeans, and locally farmed fish. These foods ensure children grow strong and adults remain productive. In sports, Nigerian athletes depend on protein-rich meals to fuel training and recovery, proving that protein remains as vital today as it was in ancient Greece.

Protein is more than food; it is life’s scaffolding. For Nigeria and beyond, ensuring accessible and affordable protein sources is not only a health necessity but also a pathway to national strength and productivity. Truly, protein is the silent power behind human progress.

Long before supermarkets and processed foods, ancient civilizations depended on grains that nourished body and soul. The Inca Empire thrived on quinoa, while Mesopotamians relied on barley to sustain their growing societies. These grains were more than food; they were the foundation of culture, trade, and survival. Today, modern science confirms what our ancestors instinctively knew, ancient grains are superfoods, loaded with fiber, protein, and essential minerals that promote long-lasting health.



Unlike refined carbohydrates that spike blood sugar and contribute to obesity, ancient grains regulate digestion, support weight management, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Millet porridge, known locally as pap or ogi, remains a staple for children and adults, while sorghum is used in producing nutritious foods and traditional drinks. Sadly, these nutrient-rich grains are often overlooked as diets shift toward imported rice and processed wheat. Yet, in times of economic strain and climate change, millet and sorghum’s resilience on dry land make them not only a healthy choice but also a sustainable one.


The
United Nations declared 2023 the International Year of Millets, highlighting the role of these grains in achieving global food security. For Nigeria, this was a call to action, reviving millet and sorghum cultivation can strengthen rural economies, reduce food imports, and combat malnutrition. By embracing the wisdom of our ancestors and integrating these grains into modern diets, Nigerians can reclaim health and prosperity.



The lesson is timeless: sometimes the oldest foods are the healthiest, and for Nigeria, they may also be the key to a more food-secure future.


Agricultural Support in Nigeria: The Role of the World Bank in Commercial Farming

Agriculture has always been central to Nigeria’s economy. From the groundnut pyramids of Kano to cocoa in the West and palm produce in the East, farming once sustained livelihoods and positioned Nigeria as a global exporter. However, decades of neglect, oil dependency, and inadequate infrastructure weakened the sector. Recognizing the urgency of revival, international institutions like the World Bank have stepped in to support Nigeria’s agricultural transformation.


At the 4th Bimonthly Progress Review Meeting of the Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP) in Kano, the World Bank Country Director, Onno Ruhl, reaffirmed the Bank’s readiness to help Nigeria make commercial agriculture a reality. With a $150 million project spread across Kano, Kaduna, Lagos, Cross River, and Enugu States, CADP is designed to boost food security, strengthen agribusiness value chains, and reduce dependence on food imports.

Ruhl emphasized that the World Bank’s vision extends beyond safeguarding Nigeria’s food supply. The goal is to shift the narrative from import dependency to food exportation, enabling Nigeria to compete in global markets. For a country that once exported groundnuts, palm oil, and cocoa in large quantities, this initiative recalls Nigeria’s agricultural golden age while pointing to a modern, competitive future.



The CADP’s rotational review meetings also stand out as an innovation among 28 World Bank-supported projects, ensuring transparency, accountability, and knowledge sharing across states. Task Team Leader Lucas Akapa praised the progress, while National Project Coordinator Aminu Babandi noted that collective reviews help refine strategies and action plans.

As the Kano State Commissioner of Agriculture, Musa Sulaiman Shanono, rightly observed, commercializing agriculture has the power to create wealth, generate jobs, and restore Nigeria’s economic pride. With effective disbursement of funds, strong monitoring, and stakeholder commitment, agricultural support projects like CADP could be the game changers Nigeria needs.

In Nigeria, food has always been central to community life and identity. The yam, for instance, is not just a staple crop but also a cultural symbol. Among the Igbo people, the New Yam Festival (Iri Ji) is a yearly event that marks gratitude to God for a bountiful harvest. Beyond its nutritional value, yam becomes a spiritual and social connector, uniting families and communities. Similarly, jollof rice, now a pan-African favorite, has become a symbol of pride and friendly rivalry between West African countries, with Nigerians fiercely defending their recipe as the best.

Geography also shapes cuisine. Coastal Nigerians enjoy fish-based meals, such as pepper soup and seafood okra, while those in the North rely more on grains like millet and sorghum, forming dishes like tuwo shinkafa. These regional differences highlight how food tells the story of environment and survival. Religious beliefs also guide diets: Muslims avoid pork, Christians emphasize communal feasting during celebrations, while traditional African religions often use kola nut or palm wine in rituals.

Food traditions also act as a bridge between generations. A grandmother teaching her grandchildren how to wrap moi moi in leaves, or a mother passing down the spice secrets of her egusi soup, is not just sharing recipes but also preserving identity. In a globalized world where fast food dominates, these traditions remind Nigerians, and the world, that food is memory, heritage, and belonging.



Eating, therefore, is not just about filling the stomach. It is about telling a story of who we are, where we come from, and what we value.

Sadly, polluted water sources threaten this lifeline, showing why investment in clean water systems is vital for national development. Just as food security is emphasized, water security must also be prioritized.




Ultimately, water is nutrition’s silent partner, it does not shout like the taste of jollof rice or suya, yet it sustains them all. A balanced diet without enough water is incomplete. For Nigeria and the world, ensuring access to safe and sufficient water is not only a health matter but also a foundation for prosperity.
